Macao Beach Naxos

About
Macao Beach sits directly on the sand at Agios Prokopios, the long crescent beach 5 km south of Naxos Town. It operates as both a full-service restaurant and a beach club, offering sunbeds, cabanas, and an all-day menu that runs from morning coffee to late-night cocktails. The kitchen blends Naxian ingredients with South American and Japanese influences — think flambéed salmon, fresh sushi rolls, Mediterranean grills, and tropical drinks mixed at the bar.
What to Expect
You'll find a lineup of cushioned sunbeds and private cabanas facing the water, bookable by the day or available first-come for a minimum spend. The restaurant occupies a covered terrace behind the beach, open-sided to catch the breeze. The menu runs long: breakfast pastries and omelets, midday salads and poke bowls, sushi platters in the afternoon, grilled octopus and steaks for dinner, plus a dedicated cocktail list heavy on rum and tequila. Service is table-side whether you're on a sunbed or at a proper table. Music picks up after sunset — lounge and house through the evening, transitioning to DJ sets on weekends as the kitchen stays open until 3am.
How to Get There
From Naxos Town port, drive south on the main coastal road toward Agios Prokopios. The beach is signposted after about 6 km. Macao Beach is on the northern end of Agios Prokopios strand, just past the main public access. There's a small parking area on the inland side of the road; if full, you can park at the public lot 100 meters south and walk along the beach. The KTEL bus to Agios Prokopios stops at the junction 200 meters up the road — request the Macao Beach stop.
Tips for Visiting
- Reserve ahead in July and August if you want a specific cabana or front-row sunbed; walk-ins often get space mid-beach or further back.
- Sunbed minimum spend typically applies (confirm when booking); it covers food and drinks but you'll want to arrive early to claim your spot.
- Sushi orders take 20–30 minutes — place your order when you arrive if you're planning lunch on the beach.
- Parking fills by noon in peak season — aim for a 10am arrival or use the public lot and walk.
- The late hours are intentional — this is one of the few beach venues on Naxos open past midnight, popular with the post-dinner cocktail crowd.
The Menu & Vibe
The South American accent shows up in ceviche, grilled chorizo, and chimichurri-dressed meats. The sushi menu runs to California rolls, spicy tuna, and salmon nigiri — not Tokyo-level but fresh and competently made. Mediterranean staples anchor the dinner list: grilled sea bream, moussaka, Greek salads with Naxian graviera. The flambéed salmon, finished tableside, is the signature dish. Cocktails lean tropical — piña coladas, mojitos, passionfruit margaritas — served in oversized glasses. Prices are resort-level but not outrageous for Agios Prokopios: expect €12–18 for mains, €10–14 for cocktails, €25–35 for sushi platters. The daytime vibe is relaxed beach club; after 9pm it shifts louder and more social, especially on Friday and Saturday when the DJ booth goes live.
What's Nearby
Agios Prokopios beach extends another kilometer south from Macao Beach, with half a dozen other beach bars and tavernas spaced along the sand. The village center, 300 meters inland, has a bakery, two minimarkets, and a couple of traditional tavernas. Agia Anna beach — quieter, less developed — is a 10-minute walk south along the shore. If you're driving, Plaka Beach (5 km further) and the cedar forest at Alyko (8 km) make easy afternoon additions.
