About

Orkos Beach is a sandy crescent on Naxos's southwest coast, roughly 15 kilometers south of Naxos Town. The bay is sheltered, the water stays shallow for dozens of meters, and the sand is clean and fine — the sort of spot families return to year after year because it delivers calm swimming without the summer crush of the northwest beaches.

What to Expect

The beach runs about 200 meters, backed by low dunes and scattered tamarisk trees that offer patchy natural shade. The water is clear turquoise, and the gentle slope means toddlers can wade safely while adults swim in waist-deep water well offshore. There are a few sunbeds and umbrellas for hire at the center of the beach, but plenty of open sand if you bring your own gear. No permanent taverna sits directly on the sand, though a seasonal beach bar sometimes sets up in summer. The vibe is unhurried — you'll see Greek families, a handful of Northern European regulars, and the occasional kitesurfer rigging up when the meltemi blows.

How to Get There

From Naxos Town, drive or ride south on the main coastal road toward Agia Anna and Plaka. Continue past Mikri Vigla — Orkos is the next beach south, about 20 minutes by car or scooter. There's an unpaved turnoff marked by a small sign; follow it down to a dirt parking area just behind the dunes. Buses don't run directly to Orkos, so you'll need your own wheels or a taxi. The road is paved until the final approach, which can get dusty but is passable for any vehicle.

Tips for Visiting

  • Bring provisions. There's no guaranteed taverna or shop at the beach itself. Pack water, snacks, and anything you'll want for the day.
  • Arrive before 11 a.m. for first pick of the limited sunbed patches and easiest parking.
  • Check the wind. The meltemi can pick up in July and August, kicking sand and making the water choppy. Early morning is almost always calm.
  • Natural shade is minimal. If you're not renting an umbrella, bring a beach tent or plan to stay in the water.
  • Cash only if the beach bar is operating — card machines are rare this far from town.

Best Time to Visit

Orkos is swimmable from late May through mid-October. June and September offer warm water, gentle wind, and almost no crowds. July and August bring hotter sand and occasional afternoon gusts, but the shallow bay remains safer than exposed west-facing beaches. Sunset is pleasant but not dramatic — the headland blocks the direct view. Come for the swimming, not the photo op.

What's Nearby

Mikri Vigla, five minutes north, is the island's kitesurfing and windsurfing hub, with gear rental and instructors. Kastraki Beach, ten minutes south, stretches for kilometers and has more tavernas and a livelier scene. Inland, the village of Vivlos sits three kilometers east and has a bakery, minimarket, and a handful of traditional kafeneia. If you're staying in the southwest corner of Naxos, Orkos makes a good midweek alternative to the busier strips.
