About

Cafe Apiranthos is a longstanding coffee and light-meal spot in Apiranthos, the mountain village 28 km east of Naxos Town. It sits on one of the village's narrow marble-paved lanes, where tables spill onto stone terraces overlooking the valleys below.

What to Expect

The cafe opens early and stays open late—9am to 2am every day—so it catches both morning coffee crowds and evening diners. The menu covers Greek coffee, espresso drinks, fresh juices, and a rotating selection of snacks and mains typical of a village kafeneio: omelettes, salads, grilled meats, and mezze plates. The kitchen leans simple rather than ambitious, which suits the setting. Seating is mostly outdoors under pergolas, with views over the tiered houses and olive groves that make Apiranthos one of Naxos's most photogenic villages.

How to Get There

From Naxos Town, take the main inland road east toward Filoti, then continue north through Filoti to Apiranthos—about 45 minutes by car. The village has limited parking along the approach roads; leave your car at one of the small lots at the village edge and walk in. Cafe Apiranthos is on the central pedestrian lane that runs through the village core, near the first cluster of tavernas as you enter from the south.

Tips for Visiting

  • Go in the late afternoon. The cafe gets afternoon shade earlier than most spots in the village, and the light on the mountains opposite is best around 5–7pm.
  • Expect a wait in summer evenings. Tables fill quickly after sunset; arrive before 7pm or be prepared to linger over a coffee until a spot opens.
  • Cash is safer. No card acceptance information was available; carry euros.
  • Combine with the village walk. Apiranthos has three small museums (folklore, natural history, geological), all within two minutes' walk. The cafe makes a natural midpoint or finish.
  • Don't rush. Service follows village pace, especially when busy.

What's Nearby

Apiranthos itself is the draw—marble lanes, Venetian tower ruins, plane trees shading the village squares. The Panagia Aperathitissa church, 100 meters uphill from the cafe, has a carved marble iconostasis worth the detour. Five kilometers south, the road passes Kaloritissa Tower, a fortified farmhouse you can visit by arrangement. Another 10 km east, the road ends at Moutsouna, a tiny port with a pebble beach and two tavernas.

Best Time to Visit

May through June and September offer the best balance: the cafe is open, the village isn't overrun, and the mountain air is cool enough to enjoy a long meal outdoors. July and August bring heat and crowds; arrive early or late in the day. From November through March, Apiranthos is quieter and some businesses close, but the cafe's year-round hours make it a reliable stop if you're exploring the interior in low season.
