Samaradiko Café

About
Samaradiko Café is a traditional kafeneio on the main road through Apiranthos, the marble-paved mountain village in the interior of Naxos. It's where locals stop for Greek coffee, ouzo, and conversation before or after walking the village's stone alleys. The café pulls both residents and travelers passing through on the route to Apollonas.
What to Expect
You'll find tables under a pergola and indoor seating that fills up with village regulars. The coffee menu covers the standards — Greek coffee, frappé, espresso — and the kitchen serves mezze plates, toasted sandwiches, and simple cooked dishes at lunch. Mornings are quiet, afternoons busier, evenings become a social hub. Service is straightforward, prices are village-level (lower than the coast), and the vibe is more local hangout than tourist café.
How to Get There
Samaradiko sits on the Apiranthos–Apollonas road (Epar.Od.), the main route that cuts through the village center. If you're driving from Naxos Town, take the inland road toward Filoti and continue to Apiranthos (about 25 minutes). Park in one of the small lots near the village square and walk; the café is a two-minute walk along the main street. If you're coming from Apollonas, it's on your right as you enter the village from the north.
Tips for Visiting
- Go mid-morning or late afternoon to catch the café at its liveliest, when locals are between errands or settling in before dinner.
- Order a Greek coffee if you want the full kafeneio experience — specify metrio (medium sweet) or sketo (no sugar) when you order.
- Pair your coffee with something small — a koulouri, a slice of mizithra pie, or a plate of olives and feta.
- Expect Greek conversation around you; this isn't a quiet work-from-laptop spot, it's a social space.
- Combine your visit with a village walk — Apiranthos has three small museums, a Venetian tower, and some of the best-preserved marble lanes on Naxos.
What's Nearby
Apiranthos is compact. From Samaradiko you can reach the Archaeological Museum, the Geological Museum, and the Natural History Museum within five minutes on foot. The village square, with its plane tree and marble fountain, is just up the street. If you're driving onward, the road north leads to the fishing hamlet of Moutsouna (15 minutes) and the abandoned emery mines at the coast, while the road south returns to Filoti and the slopes of Mount Zas.
Best Time to Visit
Samaradiko is open daily from 8 AM to midnight, making it one of the few spots in Apiranthos with consistent hours year-round. Spring and autumn are ideal for sitting outside without the midday heat. In summer, aim for early morning or post-sunset. Winter sees fewer tourists but the café remains a village fixture — you'll share the tables with shepherds and shopkeepers.
